Social Security in Spain is a public system of social protection that guarantees healthcare, pensions, subsidies, and other benefits for those legally residing in the country. Healthcare is considered a fundamental right and is provided equally to all residents, including citizens from the European Union.

What is the SIP card?

The SIP card (Sistema de Información Poblacional) is a personal and non-transferable document that grants access to Spain’s public healthcare system, including primary care, specialist consultations, and hospital treatment. It also allows for the proper management of medical history and prescriptions.

Requirements for a European citizen to obtain the SIP card

  • Legal residence: You must be registered (empadronado) at your local town hall to prove your residence in Spain.
  • Social Security registration:
    • If working in Spain, you need a Spanish Social Security number.
    • If you are a pensioner from another EU country, you can present the S1 certificate to prove your right to healthcare.
  • Required documentation (depending on your situation):
    • Pensioners: passport or ID, residence or census certificate, pension certificate, S1 certificate, and translated/apostilled birth certificate.
    • Workers: passport or ID, residence certificate, Spanish Social Security number, work record, S1 if applicable.
  • Application: Once requirements are met, apply for the SIP card at your local health center, bringing originals and copies of your documents. The card is either issued immediately or sent to your home.
  • Costs: The SIP card is generally free. In some cases (e.g., temporary cards), a small administrative fee may apply.

Summary

  • Spain’s Social Security ensures universal healthcare coverage.
  • European citizens residing in Spain can access the system through the SIP card.
  • Registration, documentation, and application are required at the local health center.
  • The process is usually free and straightforward.
