Living in Spain with pets offers a friendly, flexible and increasingly adapted environment to meet the needs of both animals and their owners. From public spaces designed for pets to a growing number of pet friendly venues and activities, the coexistence experience is becoming more welcoming and enriching.

Alicante: concrete benefits for owners and pets

In Alicante there are numerous dog parks that promote safe and healthy recreation. Sergio de Melgares Park, for example, offers drinking fountains, pipi-can areas and agility equipment. La Tuna Park, located on Monte Benacantil, has had a fenced area of 789 m² since 2017 where dogs can roam freely. The City Council has also promoted the improvement of Juan de Garay Park, including a pet recreation area with trees, benches and a drinking fountain, scheduled for completion in 2025.

Alicante also offers several dog-friendly beaches open all year round. Agua Amarga Beach in the capital is one of the largest and most accessible. Nearby municipalities include Caleta dels Gossets in Santa Pola, Punta del Riu and Barranc D’Aigües Beach in El Campello, Xarco Cove in Villajoyosa, and Mar y Montaña Beach in Altea. These beaches allow pets to run, play and swim while respecting basic rules.

The province also has wonderful hiking routes and natural parks. The path to the Albir Lighthouse offers breathtaking views over the bay, while Serra Grossa in the city center provides a green and safe environment.

Alicante’s gastronomy also includes pet friendly spaces. Among the most popular are Baobab Soul Kitchen & Bar, Casa 15 – Tapas & Wine and Sabor de Tradición. Others, such as OZ gastroclub, offer cultural and gastronomic experiences alongside pets.

Innovative proposals include the Trust Resort Canino in Ondara, a complex combining accommodation, training, swimming pool, grooming and dog sports, along with a social club and beach bar.

Pet friendly culture in Alicante and Spain: a growing trend

The Valencian Community and Alicante stand out for their wide pet friendly offer. Tourism in Spain shows a growing demand for traveling with pets, encouraging hotels, restaurants and destinations to adapt. Despite some regulatory challenges, the increasing recognition of pets as family members drives initiatives that improve their integration into urban and tourist life.
